A Swiss national, Fabio Losa holds a degree in economics from the University of Zurich (Switzerland), a PhD in economics from the University of Fribourg (Switzerland), and an academic Habilitation (HDR) from the University of Rennes 1 (France), as well as post-doc research positions in the University of Cape Town, Strathclyde University (Scotland), and Concordia University (Montreal, Canada).
He is author or co-author of more than 200 scientific and technical publications in various areas of economics and sustainable development, including in labor economics, employment and unemployment, (working) poverty and inequality, migrations, skills mismatches in relation to digitalization, regional economic integration, amongst others.
Before joining UNFPA, he served as an economist and researcher for the government and the official statistical system in Switzerland (1992-1999 and 2001-2011). He was seconded to the African Development Bank, as a senior Monitoring and Evaluation specialist (2012-2015). From 2015 until 2019, he worked as a senior researcher, policy advisor, and lecturer in development, regional, and labor market economics, with the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland. In 2020, he joined the Resident Coordinator Office in Madagascar as its economist. In this position, he was nominated for the Secretary-General Award 2023 for his innovative work under the UN 2.0 initiative.
